Outlander
by Diana Gabaldon
New York: Delacorte Press 1991.
Outlander follows Claire Randall, a former WW2 nurse, as she is whisked from her honeymoon to 1743 Scotland, via an ancient stone circle. Now a sassenach (outlander), she finds herself embroiled in politics and intrigues of the time and the object of desire for James Fraser, as she struggles with her own feelings of desire and fidelity.
The book that started it; Outlander has created an ongoing best-selling series of eight books and supplementary titles, a musical, and a well-received television series. An example of historical romance, Outlander uses time-travel to wed a protagonist from the 1940s to the Jacobite uprisings of Scotland's past.
